Revised 2020 Fisheries Maritime Regulation (REPMAR)

If you’d like to read the legislation you can check out our English version here.

It’s been 90 days since the Mozambique government approved the revised fisheries maritime regulation (REPMAR). This means it officially came into effect on January 6th!

Exciting news for Mozambique and our waters!! A big THANK YOU to everyone involved as these regulations offer protection for crucial marine species. It is now illegal to capture, retain on board, tranship/unload, transport or market the species listed in Annex XIII which include:

  • giant & potato groupers
  • all species of seahorse
  • great white sharks
  • oceanic whitetip sharks
  • whale sharks
  • many species of mobula rays (including mantas)
  • all sawtooth sharks
  • all sea turtle species
  • all dolphins
  • all whales
  • dugongs
  • and some invertebrate species too!

If you’d like to read the legislation you can check out our English version here. Check out Chapter 6 for the protection measures!

Needless to say this is a huge step in the right direction and our community is looking forward to transferring this into practise in our local region. A win for the oceans!
