Deakin and Blue and Love The Oceans have worked together for the last two years and we’re thrilled to be working with this high-impact, female-founded and sustainable women’s swimwear brand again this summer.
Recognised by Vanity Fair as one of the “most sustainable fashion brands” and winner of the Independent’s Best Buy Sports Swimwear 2018 and 2019, Deakin and Blue are certainly making waves when it comes to having an impact – on women’s lives and the planet.
Starting on the 5th May, we’re running a week-long give away on our Instagram pages (@deakinandblue @lovetheoceans), giving you a chance to win a £100 gift voucher for D&B. Make sure you’re following both accounts on Instagram to be in with a chance of winning.
Here, Deakin and Blue Founder Rosie tells us a bit more about Deakin and Blue and the brilliant work they do.
So… who is Deakin and Blue?
Deakin and Blue is a transformational women’s swimwear brand. We make sleek, sculpting and sustainable swimwear designed to help women feel incredible in a swimsuit, whatever your shape or size.
I founded Deakin and Blue in 2017 after struggling to find a swimsuit for my weekly swim and learning that 500,000 women in England had given up swimming and 1 in 2 mums had stopped taking their children to learn to swim, because of body image concerns.
At Deakin and Blue we’re on a mission to change that with swimwear designed by women for women and produced responsibly from ocean waste in London.
So how are Deakin and Blue different?
For women by women
At D&B we put women at the heart of our swimwear design. Every piece is designed by a team of experts in consultation with customers about their “swimwear pain points”, and every swimsuit and bikini is available in three distinct silhouettes: for AA-B cup busts – the Hepburn, for C-E cup busts – the Monroe and for F-HH cup busts – the Hendricks. We think extensively about fabric choice (ultra soft and sculpting), colour palette (flattering regardless of skin tone) and product cut and fit. So whether you’re an athletic or a more curvy size 12, we’ll have the piece for you.
Sustainable
At D&B we believe in the triple bottom line: people, planet and profit. We operate a sustainable, circular economy model that allows us to develop high quality, sustainably-made products which both meet customer needs as well as having a net-positive impact on the planet and the people involved at every stage of our journey.
Firstly and most importantly, all D&B swimwear is made from a regenerated yarn called ECONYL® which is made from post-consumer waste such as old fishing nets and industrial plastic scraps. So instead of using virgin nylon and contributing yet more to landfill, our team help turn trash into treasure, re-using and re-purposing waste nylon. This is not just great for the planet but it also makes our swimwear super-durable, colour-fast and hyper-resistant to chlorine, salt water & UV rays. Win win.
Beyond fabric, we’ve removed single use plastic from every business process (including production and distribution), we only partner with Oeko-Tex® certified suppliers and we’ve sourced 100% reusable and recyclable packaging materials. We are so confident in the quality of our swimwear and in our guarantee that they are “made to last” that we also offer a repair service on all D&B products. Seam coming unstitched? Send it back to us and we’ll get it repaired for you completely free of charge.
Made in London
Every Deakin and Blue swimsuit and bikini is made responsibly in our small production studio in London where we know every seamstress by name. So if you’ve ever wondered “#WhoMadeMyClothes”, we can tell you. We also produce in small batch production runs to avoid over-stocking and contributing waste stock to landfill. (£140m clothing in the UK goes to landfill every year).
A body-positive brand
Finally, we’re passionate about celebrating brilliant healthy bodies at every shape and size and debunking the myth that bodies have to look a certain shape, size or colour to be beach ready. We never retouch our images (no teeth whitening, no cellulite removal, no reshaping entire body parts or adding in abs or muscle tone) and we photograph every product on a range of models with different shapes and sizes to help you see what a product might look like on your body. For some real feel-good body positive motivation, make sure you follow us on Instagram (@deakinandblue).
Why are Love The Oceans and Deakin and Blue working together?
We’re delighted to be collaborating once again with Love the Oceans to help raise awareness about reducing waste from our oceans, as well as promoting sustainable fashion, body positivity and encouraging more women to get into the water. D&B and LTO are two brands with a huge number of shared values, in particular a fundamental sustainable ethos coupled with a focus on getting more women in the water and feeling confident – so it’s an irresistible partnership for us!
