If week 1 of our expedition was a warm up, then week 2 was definitely the main event. Every day was filled to the brim with activities and work, a fulfilling experience. To start the week we spent two days in Guinjata school, teaching ocean literacy to large groups of students in the mornings where we covered the topic of whales and then delved into more detail on humpback whales on day 2. Our afternoons at the school were spent peacefully painting a world map mural to be used as a learning accessory.
Over the course of Wednesday and Thursday, we completed 4 transect dives that challenged us with strong currents and many stonefish. Luckily we made it out alive, and were rewarded with hours of data logging and toast. We quickly learnt all the common reef fish and managed to finish logging in time to treat ourselves to a pre-dinner ocean swim.
Paindane fisheries was a lovely way to close out the week. We walked 45 minutes along the beach at sunrise before relaxing on the beach and measuring any fish that the fishermen caught. The walk home was slightly less enjoyable with the sunburn that Will accumulated throughout the day, but nonetheless, a great end to the week.
The final weekend is upon us, a perfect time to paddle board, drink some cocktails and say our goodbyes. This has been a once in a lifetime trip 🙂
It was such a pleasure having Harriet and Will join us for our 2 week expedition. We hope to welcome you back next year! In the meantime, if you’re reading this and interested in joining us in Mozambique, check out our expeditions page here.
