Kira and James 2 week Expedition
First week in Mozambique! We’ve covered quite a few things but gathering data for fisheries research and learning about local fishing practices was really interesting and something culturally significant that I enjoyed witnessing. After learning to dive in freezing cold Scotland, diving here has been incredible, such a different environment with so many new species to see. Dealing with the temperature change has been a bit of a challenge but the occasional breeze that we get whilst riding in the back of the truck is really nice. One of my favourite parts of this trip so far is being a complete animal nerd and watching all the butterflies in the garden and the geckos walking about in the house. I am very grateful for everything we have done so far and am excited to do something new each day. Watching the sunset every night in the garden or from the back of the truck is really peaceful, my younger self would be smiling if she could see me now experiencing things I always wanted to in such a beautiful place. ~ Kira
So far, being an LTO volunteer has been an amazing experience. As this is my first time in Africa, I was not ready for the heat! The fisheries data collection was really interesting and fun, I loved getting to see all the cool local animals that live in the waters here. I even got to see an octopus which is my favourite animal! We also did a beach clean and then got to up-cycle some of the plastic into animal shaped key rings which was a super interesting process to be a part of. One of my favourite parts so far has been the cultural tour we went on. Getting to help make matapa, see how local people live, and how the kids are taught in school was so fun and informative, I have learned so much. As someone who loves entomology, seeing all the different critters here is definitely a highlight! I’m excited to see what else this trip has in store for me! ~ James
