Bray Lake Watersports: A Community Of Water Lovers

Over the next few months while everyone is struggling through this tricky time, the team at Love The Oceans wants to bring you a little bit of good news of awesome environmental movements and brands that our team love and we genuinely believe in. There’s also some goodies to be had – check our instagram out (@lovetheoceans) and enter the draw.

Why have Love the Oceans and Bray Lake decided to work together?

Where Love The Oceans is based in Mozambique, stand up paddle-boarding (SUPing) and other paddle sports are useful to be able to get closer to wildlife (non-motorised = less noise & disturbance). Many of our team are international, and Francesca, our Founder, returns to the UK over the British winter for talks, meetings and events. Last winter she decided to do her SUP instructors to enable more of our researchers to get out on the water safely and collect more data. We think Bray Lake Watersports is one of the best and friendliest places to learn to paddle, with excellent service. It’s also really important during these times to support small independent businesses like Bray Lake Let’s here from Simon Frost, Bray Lake Watersports Owner…

So…who is Bray Lake Watersports?

Bray Lake Watersports has been introducing both juniors and adults to the world of water sport for over 40 years. We started as just a Windsurfing Centre but now teach and host a whole range of other water sports and activities including sailing, canoeing, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding and run a busy equipment hire facility and active club. The centre also runs a popular open water swimming venue for lovers of wild swimming, specialist long distance and cold-water swimmers, triathletes as well as a fishing club. The centre runs adult and junior course, private coaching, school activity days, school holiday course, events, competitions, club activities, holidays and away days. As well as these in-house activities Bray Lake also hosts a regular Segway Rally and Bungy jump and a Woodland Pre-School.

A Stand Up Paddle Board lesson in action!

We first met Francesca a few months ago, at the start of the UK winter when she started coming down to Bray Lake to improve her Stand Up Paddleboarding. This winter was a particularly difficult winter for SUPing due to the regular windy days, great for our Windsurfers though. It was during this period that we got to know Francesca and of her passion for the sea and she in turn, developed her SUP skills and love for SUP. The culmination of this windy winter was Francesca completing her BSUPA SUP instructors course enabling her to take her love for SUP out to the team at Love the Oceans. After getting to know Francesca and her work with LTO and getting a glimpse of her passion for the sea its creatures and in particular Mozambique it became clear that we shared a lot of common ground and were keen to be involved and help her spread the word.

So why is Bray Lake so different?

Bray Lake Watersports are truly a water sports centre with a difference, we’re not just a water sports centre but a water sports community.

The staff all love their chosen sport and love teaching their students new skills but what they really love is developing in people a lifelong love of the sports and the water. As soon as you come to the Centre you will realise there is something quite different about us: our slightly chaotic but essentially organised centre has a busy but friendly feel.

Bray Lake Watersports plays an important role in many people’s lives, as a gathering place for those with a passion for spending time on or in the water and in the company of friends – there is a real feeling of community. Multiple scientific studies have proven that spending time outdoors reduces stress and anxiety levels and ultimately improves your health.
